In 2007 alone 8,657 (21%) of the 41,059 fatalities on our Nation's roadways occurred in intersections.  With different crossing and entering movements by both drivers and pedestrians, an intersection is one of the most complex traffic situations that motorists encounter.  The need for clear and understandable horizontal pavement markings is crucial to reducing accidents.
